CALANGUTE: Calangute Panchayat in collaboration with the Church body and residents undertook a cleanliness drive at Calangute.
“We are collecting garbage with the help of nine trucks in four zones with 50-odd people. Four trucks have been pressed into service on a regular basis while one is engaged to remove garbage along the beaches which also take care of beach shack garbage during season,” said Joseph Sequeira.
“We also have another truck lifting garden waste on a regular basis. So far, we have been able to achieve almost 80 per cent success which could be cent per cent with the participation of people,” added Sequeira.
“We will provide two bins for individual houses to collect wet and dry waste separately in the near future through the panchayat funds in our endeavour to see ‘Clean Calangute’ and restore its past glory,” he said.
“All our panchayat members are helping us. We are however facing problems due to dumping of garbage from surrounding villages either on the borders or inside the village. We have decided to install CCTVs at strategic points besides the entrance gate at the dumping site. We have also decided to fence the dumping site to avoid dogs from entering the composting unit,” added Sequeira.
