VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council carried out surprise inspection of stalls selling food located outside the Vasco Railway Station and removed encroachments on the road.

The municipal workers in the presence of market inspectors and supervisors removed stalls that had encroached on the road. Mormugao Municipal Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, Municipal Market Committee Chairman and councilor Vinod Kinlekar and councilor Narayan Borkar were also present.

Rodrigues asked most of the stall operators to clear their dues and to strictly maintain hygiene or to face stern action. He said that most of the stalls had not paid their dues and had encroached on roads. They were also serving food in unhygienic conditions, he said adding that most of these stalls were moveable carts but had become permanent there.

Rodrigues said that the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) had written to the municipality stating that these stalls were selling foods in unhygienic conditions. He said that the municipality had now cleared encroachments and also seized few handcarts, who had not paid their dues.

Mormugao market committee chairman and councillor Vinod Kinlekar said that stall operators should get their licences renewed by paying fees. He also said that all the stall operators have been asked to maintain cleanliness.

Borkar said that most of these roadside vendors were using LPG cylinders by flouting rules thereby putting people’s life under threat.
