PORVORIM: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has received clearance from Goa State Urban Development Agency  (GSUDA) to construct second floor on the new fish market building.
Speaking to Herald, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari said GSUDA has sanctioned Rs 3.93 crore to construct mini hall on the first floor and two lifts. “One lift will be for the people, while the other for transporting goods,” he said.
“The beef, pork and meat vendors, who are presently operating from the old premises in the municipal market, have expressed their inability to shift on the first floor of the new fish market, as it is not possible for them to transport bulky beef/pork on the first floor by climbing the steps,” said Falari.
“MMC has decided to construct separate lift for them. The chicken vendors have agreed to shift on the first floor. Water proofing has not been done atop the first floor. Hence, the construction of the second floor will be taken up soon,” he added.
“Once the chicken, meat, pork and beef vendors shift to the new fish market, the existing building will be demolished and the area will be used for parking. The work order to complete the pending work of the vegetable market has also been issued,” said Falari.
“Some modifications have been made in the old design to accommodate more vegetable and fruit vendors. The contractor has told that he will commence the work of the vegetable market after monsoon,” he said.
