June 5 is World Environment Day, an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global-day for positive environmental action.  This year’s theme is – ‘Small Island and Climate Change’ and the slogan is – ‘Raise your voice and not the sea level’.
The United Nations has dedicated June 5 as World Environment Day to encourage a worldwide awareness for the environment.
Climate change is a fact which is undeniable.  Its impact is being felt all over the world, with some countries facing very severe winters, while others are undergoing prolonged periods of drought or heavy monsoons.
The Arctic ice is melting at a very rapid rate leading to rising sea levels.
There is a genuine fear that some island countries could even disappear in the next 25/30 years due to the rise in sea levels.
The intention of this year’s theme is to draw the world’s attention to the phenomenon of climate change and the huge adverse impact it will have on the world in general and on small islands in particular. The theme seeks to focus attention on the urgent need to reduce man’s carbon footprint in order to slow and if possible even reverse climate change and its devastating after effects.
Can we achieve this goal of reducing our carbon footprint?
The answer is yes! Certainly we can achieve this if we all work together towards our goal, each one contributing his small bit.
