MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has given a final opportunity till the Diwali festival to the hospitals and clinics to get registered with the concerned authorities with regard to handling bio-medical waste. Thereafter the civic body will not lift bio-medical waste from these health clinics and hospitals.
On Monday a meeting was held in the Margao municipality with the representatives of hospitals and clinics, which was also attended by the Meshak Dayanand, South Goa in-charge of Biotec Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd, which runs a treatment plant at Kundaim.

MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes who chaired the meeting gave a time period to hospitals and clinics to finalise the handling of bio-medical waste by Diwali festival.
He warned of strict action against those violating the bio-medical rules and guidelines, and warned that the civic body will not lift the bio-medical waste from the health care facilities, as he has orders from the government pertaining to the same.
“Now a designated common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBWTF) is set up by the government through Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) at Kundaim IDC, for scientific treatment and disposal of bio-medical waste. Concessionaire of the CBWTF is Biotic Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd”, he informed the representatives of hospitals and health care facilities.
Speaking to the media Meshak Dayanand, South Goa in-charge of Biotec Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd said that as per the their survey there are nearly 303 health care facilities in the Salcete taluka.
“However, only 35 paid the security amount to the authorities with regard to the Memorandum of Understanding to deal with bio-medical waste generated by the hospitals and health care facilities”, he stated.
“As per the orders by the government, the civic body can stop collecting the bio-medical waste from today itself. However, we have decided to give some time for the hospitals and health care facilities”, Chief Officer stated.
Shockingly there was no representative of the All India Medical Association and Goa State Pollution Control Board at the meeting to discuss one of the important issues.
