MARGAO: Moved by the plight of students who struggle to reach school on time due to the major traffic congestion at Navelim junction, a government servant Clive Gracias has been voluntarily controlling traffic in the area during morning hours.
He can be seen controlling traffic between 7.30 to 8.30 am at Navelim junction, where there’s a major traffic daily during the school hours. His service has been well appreciated by the
villagers of Navelim, besides officials from the police
department.
Taking note of Clive’s service, Traffic Cell, Margao has officially appointed him as a traffic warden. He serves at the Water Resource Department (WRD) at Rawanfond, however, he makes a point to control the traffic before reporting for work.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Clive said that his only concern is for the students so that they should not be late for their classes due to the traffic chaos.
Due to his presence there, the traffic has been moving very smoothly in the morning peak hour.
“It all started in the month of June last year, when I was coming to drop my child at the Perpetual Succour Convent High School. I used to witness major traffic congestion at the Navelim junctions, which was resulting in students getting late for school,” Gracias informed.
He further said that he thought of having word with the concerned police officials pertaining to offering voluntary service in controlling the traffic congestion at Navelim, wherein the department appointed him as a traffic warden.
It is pertinent to note that Navelim junction is considered as one of the major accident prone zones due to the unstoppable traffic movement, mostly during the school hours; resulting chaos.
“As citizens, we need to do something or return back to society. We have been witnessing traffic chaos at many places and mostly at the locations where educational institutions are being located. We need to offer our service or at least cooperate with the authorities in controlling the traffic,” he said.
Commenting on the
service offered by Clive Gracias, several villagers from Navelim have appreciated his efforts.
“I have personally seen Clive doing this service and he deserves appreciation,” said Carmo Carneiro, a resident of Navelim.
He said that Navelim, a silent village of yesteryears, has turned out to be a hub for all commercial and residential businesses due to presence of a railway station in the vicinity, along with educational institutes – Rosary High school, Perpetual Succour Convent High school and Rosary College.
