CALANGUTE: The Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) has demanded that all ongoing commercial activities be stopped within the Fort Aguada Jail complex and urged the authorities not to renew the bar licence, which expires on May 31.
In a memorandum to the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) and other authorities on Thursday, the CCF objected to the permission given to a bar and restaurant inside the fort premises.
“This is totally unacceptable in a place where freedom fighters were jailed, tortured and martyred. The entire purpose of the restoration of Aguada jail was to showcase the struggle of freedom fighters of Goa. However, this objective does not appear to be fulfilled,” the CCF said.
The NGO also said permission has been given for allowing accommodation to tourists within the premises, to organise weddings and other events when no historic buildings can be transformed into touristic hotel or used for commercial purposes.
In the memorandum, the CCF has urged the authorities to ‘stop all ongoing commercial activities within the Fort Aguada Jail, specially the bar’.
