PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday urged students and parents not to be anxious over admissions in Class XI stating that all students would be accommodated by either increasing the class strength or number of divisions per higher secondary, as per requirement.
Parrikar, who is also Education Minister Monday, addressed media after the education department was caught in a piquant situation where 6,500 more students passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination this year, putting strain on various higher secondary schools across the state.
Parrikar said that total 18,000 students passed this year as against 11,500 students the last year. He said that this includes those students who had appeared and passed during October 2012 examination.
He said that the passing percentage for 2012-13 is 85 percent while it was 78 percent previous year. “The drop in fail percentage is due to the internal marks,” he said.
Chief Minister said that this year government is expecting around 16,000 to 17,000 admissions as against 13,300 last year. There are around 2500 who might go for diploma courses.
“But there is no need to be worried as government will ensure that all the students get admission for HSSC. Directions have been issued to all higher secondary schools to accept admission forms as and when they receive them and not to deny students admission. Government will take up the review of all applications by first week of June and accordingly a decision would be taken,” he said adding ‘the last date for admissions is June 4’.
Parrikar said that currently there are 318 divisions with total 68 private and nine government higher secondary. The strength per class is 50. “If we go as per this ratio, 15500 will get accommodated. For the balance, we can increase the strength per class to 55 and create 30 additional divisions,” he said.
“The modality would be worked out in respect to only those schools which have received more applications and cannot accommodate them,” he said.
