CM announces suicide prevention cells

PANJIM: In the backdrop of a series of suicides, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday announced the formation of cells that would try and get in touch with suicide prone individuals and families, so that they can be stopped from taking the extreme step.

Addressing the gathering on the Independence Day after hoisting the national flag near the old Secretariat on Friday morning, Parrikar said that the cell would be formed in association with NGOs.
“The government is reaching out to maximum people through its social welfare schemes. But there are isolated families which we are not able to reach. The cell will be monitoring the families in distress,” he said.
Chief Minister was referring to the recent suicide by a family of three including a minor daughter in Cumbharjua, who ended their lives upset over the sudden death of their young son.
“Earlier there was a social system within the village which would rush to the help of distressed families. But now there is no such support system because of which they are left in distress, forcing them to take the extreme step,” he stated.
Parrikar said the cell would continuously monitor such families with the help of NGOs and villagers.
“The proper guidelines and framework for the cells would be decided in three months,” he added urging the people to support the initiative with a positive mind frame.
Chief Minister said that the government is marching towards its dream of a Golden Goa without disturbing the natural beauty and peace and tranquillity in the State. “Though the Liberation of Goa came after 1961, 14 years after the Independence of the Country, the State has played a vital role in the nation building,” he said.
Parrikar said that the government is laying emphasis on development and generation of employment opportunity for youth along with a major focus on providing  essential services like Power, water for 24 hours, non polluting industries, quality education, bridges wherever necessary, standard health service, encouragement for arts and culture and strengthening law and order.
