CM assures formalin-free fish

Asks Opposition not to politicise issue nor create unnecessary panic; Says the second check by the QCI will be in place in two days, which will clear all the doubts

PANJIM: A day after Congress claimed that formalin laced fish re-entered the Goan markets, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has asked the Opposition to not politicise the issue nor create unnecessary panic.
He also assured to put in place system to ensure double-check of the fish by the Quality Control of India (QCI) within two days.
“The file has been pending for some time but nevertheless, I will clear the file tomorrow (Tuesday). In two days, the second check by the QCI will be in place. It will clear the doubts… the government is committed in providing chemical-free fish to the people,” said Sawant.
The CM had earlier during the day held a review meeting with the Food & Drugs Administration Director, Fisheries Director and the authorities concerned in connection with the controversy surrounding the imported fish. The meeting also comes after the Congress, based on an independent testing, alleged that formalin fish are once again being sold to the consumers in the State.
“The fish stocks are being checked at the border check posts and a day-to-day report is being sent to the FDA. The law enforcing authorities are also checking every document before allowing the vehicles entering the State. The entire exercise began 10 days before fishing ban was imposed on June 1. The issue should not be politicised nor necessarily create panic and confusion amongst the people,” added Sawant.
