CM assures to protect huts of traditional fishermen

PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured traditional fishermen of finding a solution and protecting their huts across beaches in Goa.

After receiving notices from the High Court for removal of illegal shacks and encroachments on the beachs, the traditional fishermen were a worried lot and along with Calangute MLA Michael Lobo met the CM and placed their grievances before him.

“Though the High Court order is about encroachments on beaches, it doesn’t encompass the traditional huts of fishermen. Infact, the CRZ law protects the structures of traditional fishermen,” Sawant said assuring the delegation that he would look into the issue.

O Heraldo reported the concerns of how the statement of Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte of removing encroachments on beaches had resulted in added worries to the fishermen community.

Khaunte later clarified that the traditional fishermen would not be affected by his statement.
