CM: Ban on SRS will be extended

PANJIM: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Monday announced that he will extend the ban on Hindu right-wing organization Sri Ram Sene, by another six months.

“I have read in some newspapers about the ban period having lapsed. I will now order further extension of the ban period by six months,” Parsekar told media when asked about government’s failure to extend the ban on the right-wing outfit that lapsed in December 2014.
On October 18, 2014, the Parrikar government had extended the ban on Sri Ram Sene for 60 days under Section 144 (4) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, which ended on December 18, 2014.
As per the rule, if the State government does not extend the ban before the end of the previous ban, then it is deemed that there is no ban. On August 20, 2014, the Goa government had first banned the Hindu right-wing group from entering the State.
While imposing the ban, directions were issued to superintendents of police of both districts to assess the situation and submit a report to the Home department on the issue of deciding whether the ban should be extended.
In June 2014, SRS chief Pramod Muthalik had announced his plan to set up a branch of the SRS in the State, in September. Muthalik had earlier expressed his desire to curb Goa’s western culture of clubs and pubs, just as the Sene had attempted to do in Mangalore through the infamous assault on young girls outside the pub.
