MARGAO:  Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Sunday canvassed for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed candidates for the upcoming Margao Municipal Council (MMC) elections.

Sawant addressed four corner meetings, held closed door meetings at six places and had dinner with party workers.

Addressing the meeting in Ward 15 at Sirvodem where Uday Dessai is contesting, he said, “BJP candidates have to be elected for not only infrastructure development but also for human development. Since the BJP is ruling in the State and at the Centre, it would be ideal to have the Margao Municipal Council managed by the party.”

He lamented that Margao, particularly Sirvodem has not seen much development despite Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat representing the town for so many years and having his council elected every time.

“It is the BJP that has brought about infrastructure development in Goa as can be seen with the various bridges we have built,” he said and added that the BJP also believes in human development because of which the Swayampurna Goa scheme was launched.

He said reservations in jobs and admissions are now made available for the economically weaker sections of the society and regretted that there are hardly any registrations under this category.

“There are seats reserved at Goa Medical College and the Engineering College for the economically weaker sections,” he said and urged the people to get themselves registered.

Sawant said his government has already advertised 3,050 jobs in government sector and asked people to apply for the same.

“Most people give their bio-data to a BJP worker without an application and yet expect a job which is not possible as the BJP worker will not apply for the job,” he said.

Sawant said the Model Career Centre at the Employment Exchange is now providing jobs in the private sector and disclosed that recently he handed over appointment letters to around 60 persons in private companies.

Dr Pramod also addressed corner meetings in Ward 13, where the BJP has fielded Dr Sushanta Vishant Kurtarkar, sister of ex-councillor Ketan Kurtarkar and in Ward 14 where Ronita Ajgaonkar, the niece of Tourism Minister Babu Ajgaonkar is contesting. He addressed another meeting in Ward 16 where Anisha alias Anita Naik is the candidate.
