PONDA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Sunday expressed concern over the prevailing quality of education in Goa and stressed need for providing quality education to Goan students.
He felt that current educational syllabus has become outdated.
He was speaking after inaugurating the new school building of Goa Vidyaprasarak Mandal at Ponda.
Stating that government is committed to improving education, he said that earlier Goans excelled despite lack of educational infrastructure in Goa. “But today despite having all the facilities at the doorsteps, Goan students lag behind in national entrance tests,” he rued.
He said that despite all drawbacks, researchers like Dr Anil Kakodkar and Dr Ragunath Mashelkar excelled in their fields which is rarely seen nowadays among Goan students. Therefore, he called upon the parents and teachers to introspect over the quality of education provided to students and think seriously to find out reasons behind this.
He said there are reasons and intentions behind those opposing establishing IIT at Cancona. “The government has not given up the idea to setup IIT at Cancona but if around 250 acres of land is made available elsewhere government would think of shifting IIT that place,” he said.
Present on the Occasion were PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, MP Adv Narendra Sawaikar, President of general body of GVM’s Bhasker Khandeparkar, Chairman of working committee Krishna Shetye and secretary Deepak Gaonkar.
