CM for second opportunity to NEET phase-1 students

Says will move SC urging the Apex court to allow students to repeat the exam on July 24

PANJIM: With over 400 students answering the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) on Sunday in the first phase, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that government’s contention before the Supreme Court would be to give parity to these students, allowing them to answer the second phase of NEET examination on July 24.
The State government on Monday will file interlocutory application (IA) before the Supreme Court to grant relief to these students seeking admission for MBBS and dentistry. On Sunday, a total of 420 students from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka, answered NEET.
These students had registered for the All-India Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Test (AIPMT) which is renamed as NEET phase 1. The second phase of NEET is scheduled on July 24 for candidates who have not registered for AIPMT.
“We want the Supreme Court to give a fair opportunity to all students. Equal platform should be given as all deserve the best. Our plea would be that students who answered in phase I should be given another opportunity to answer in the second phase,” Parsekar told Herald.
“I have told Advocate General to file an application before the Apex Court putting across the ground reality. The situation is not just in Goa but in many other States. We hope that Court will look into our demand positively,” Parsekar added.
The apex court on April 28 upheld that single common entrance test for admission to MBBS and BDS courses for 2016-17 academic year. The NEET exams are based on NCERT syllabus followed by CBSE schools. Meanwhile, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) that conducts the annual GCET has stated that nothing stops these students from appearing for the State-level entrance tests too.
“Our GCET is not just for entrance in MBBS or medical section but for various courses. There is no ruling from Supreme Court that students cannot answer state common entrance test. They can say that for medical entrance only NEET marks would be considered,” DTE Director Vivek Kamat said.
As many as 5600 students have applied for the Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET) for various undergraduate professional courses including MBBS and dentistry. The GCET will be held on May 10 and 11.
