Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Saturday said that the State Government is according top priority to education sector. He said, Goan students are not lagging behind in professional studies be it IIT and other courses but what they needed is proper guidance and support which the State Government is willing to give.
Inaugurating the National Institute of Technology, Goa, the first among the ten new NIT’s proposed in the country at a function held at Farmagudi on Saturday, Kamat expressed satisfaction over the establishment of the prestigious NIT Institute in Goa. He assured to extend all support to NIT Goa in its future endeavours. National Institute of Technology Karnataka-Surathkal is the mentor institute for NIT Goa.
Minister for Transport, Sudin Dhavalikar and Chief Secretary, Sanjay Srivastava were present on the occasion.
Terming the establishment of NIT Goa as a historic day for the State of Goa, the Chief Minister said, NIT, the institute of repute will help accomplish the dream of Goa in promoting technical education in Goa in a big way in the years to come. He thanked the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and Union Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal for fulfilling the commitment of establishing NIT in Goa. He said, he has already asked Kapil Sibal to reserve 50% seats for Goans in NIT Goa. MHRD has allocated an annual in take of 90 students to NIT Goa comprising of 30 students each in B Tech programme of computer science and engineering, electronics and communication engineering, electrical and electronics engineering.
The Chief Minister who released a book on academic regulations and brochure on NIT Goa further, said that the people of Goa should introspect of their best interest. He said, efforts are being made to make Goa a model state in the country and that a road map for Goa has been prepared for next 25 years. He said he has asked the Union Minister for Heavy Industries Vilasrao Deshmukh to establish public sector undertakings in Goa so as to generate employment to the educated unemployed youth and for drop outs as well.
Minister for Transport, Sudin Dhavalikar said that the National Institutes of technology are premier institutions of technology in India and are known for imparting quality technical education. He stressed the need to have a independent campus for NIT Goa equip with all the infrastructure facilities. He thanked the Chief Minister for making Farmagudi plateau an educational hub.
Chief Secretary, Sanjay Srivasatava said that the first batch of 77 students at NIT Goa will be the torch bearers of the institute in the years to come and to take it to greater heights in technical education. He advised the students to learn the best and become good professionals.
Dr M Modassir expressed his gratitude to mentor institute NITK-Suratkal. He highlighted the importance of education and stressed the need to imbibe values of honesty, humanity, goodwill among students to become good end responsible human beings.
Collector of South Goa, G P Naik and Vice-Chancellor of Goa University, Dr Deelip Deobagkar were present on the occasion.
Earlier, Prof Sandeep Sancheti, Director NIT Surathkal and Goa welcomed and Vivek Kamat, Principal of GEC proposed the vote of thanks.
