MARGAO, AUG 27
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Friday took a round of the city here early Friday morning with officials of the Margao Municipality and traffic cell in tow in a bid to tackle the burning issue of garbage and traffic congestion.
The chief minister visited Aquem, Old station road, Pajifond and the Old market stretch of the road to take stock of the prevailing situation. Kamat is believed to have issued a slew of directions to the Margao Municipal Chief Officer to streamline garbage collection after he found that waste left uncollected near the garbage bins. The chief officer was told to provide brooms to the garbage vehicles to ensure that workers clear the waste near the bins.
The chief minister further instructed the chief officer to get grass cleared from the footpaths and trim branches leaning on the public pathways.
The presence of garden waste in the garbage bins irked the chief minister, who demanded to know how the waste was finding its way to the municipal bins.
Taking note of the bad condition of the Old market road, the chief minister said the road would be repaired after the monsoons.
“We will take suitable steps to implement all the instructions of the chief minister. The civic body will work out a monitoring mechanism to ensure that the garbage and other waste is collected regularly without any problem,” remarked MMC Chief Officer Y B Tawde.
Meanwhile, the chief officer served a memo to two employees, including a Municipal truck driver and an UDC.
Tawde said the duo have been asked explanations on their conduct as far as garbage lifting is concerned.
