PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday warned that the government will not tolerate activities of some activists operating NGOs and indulging in extortion under the garb of helping people.
Sawant said that several complaints had been in this regards and that his government will act against such NGOs if people complain against them.
“Those unnecessarily criticising in the name of NGOs will have to bear in mind that the government will not keep quiet,” he said adding that he will look at norms laid down by the Goa Police Department and the Registrar of Societies to check what measures can be put in place to curb such NGOs.
“It is important to put a curb on NGOs, which run at such personal level, not for the sake of society but for their own personal good,” Sawant said.
The Chief Minister appealed to the people not to fall prey to such NGOs indulging in extortion and to lodge police complaints.
Reacting to the protests against activist Shreya Dhargalkar for hurting religious sentiments, the CM warned that the government will not tolerate such activities.
“Arrest of self-styled activist Shreya Dhargalkar has sent a strong message to the public at large that persons making irresponsible statements and using social media without control will be dealt with a firm hand by the State government, Sawant said.
“It was a good thing that after my instructions police department arrested Shreya in both Cuncolim and Bicholim cases. Stong message has gone to people that the government will not keep quiet in such cases,” Sawant said.
The Chief Minister further stated that stern action as possible will be taken against Dhargalkar for making statements and hurting religious sentiments. “Such statements will not be tolerated against any religion,” he said.
