CM: ITI Certificate set to be equivalent to Class XII for better career, education prospects

PORVORIM: The Goa government is devising a plan to elevate the two-year Industrial Training Institute (ITI) certificate to the equivalent of Class XII pass. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced this initiative to provide greater opportunities for ITI students to pursue admissions in degree courses like BA, BCom, and more.

In response to a starred question jointly tabled by MLAs Carlos Alvares Ferreira, Vijai Sardesai, and Cruz Silva in the Legislative Assembly, CM Sawant revealed that the government is also committed to increasing the seats reserved for ITI students in Polytechnics by 10 percent.

To facilitate vertical mobility for ITI students, 26 percent of seats in the second year of Diploma Engineering are reserved for ITI pass outs, Sawant added.

Sardesai highlighted concerns regarding the progress of skill development in the past year. He brought to the House’s notice that the Skill Development Mission had met only once in October 2020. During that meeting, it was decided to establish District Skill Committees and an international skill institute in collaboration with the National Skill Development, along with high-end skill development courses at Mapusa. However, the government is yet to constitute the District Skill Committees.

Chief Minister Sawant acknowledged the existing partnerships between the government and industry associations, starred hotel groups, and the Tata Group for the upgradation of 10 government ITIs and three private ITIs in the State.
