PANJIM: Claiming that the crime detection rate in Goa for the month of January, this year has been similar to that of January 2012, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said that the law and order situation in the State is not that bad as depicted by some.
Parrikar was responding to the concern raised by Fatorda MLA VijaI Sardesai over the law and order situation in the State. Sardesai along with Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco Tuesday entered the House with black ribbon on head as a mark of protest over the deteriorating crime and order situation and police failure in tracing the culprit involved in the case of sexual assault on seven year old girl in Vasco.
Parrikar pointed out that during the January 1 to January 26, 2013 period, total 15 incidents were reported including murder (six), rape (three) and fatal road accidents (eight) while in 12 cases the culprit was caught. Similarly, for 2012, the state reported 29 incidents which include murder (six), rape (four) and accidents (29) while the detection was done in 24 cases, he added.
Parrikar assured the legislative members that there is no need to fear as the government is building enough pressure on police to curtail the crime rate.
“The law and order situation can be termed as bad only when people will have fear in their minds to move on roads,” he said adding “currently the police force is running short of man power and also it has no IGP and the two posts of DGP are vacant.
Speaking to HERALD, Congress legislator Reginaldo said that the black ribbon is a mark of protest against the arrest of former Congress MLA Jose Philip D’Souza by police for participating in a democratic strike over failure of police to nab the culprit in Vasco sexual assault case.
