CM: Law to ban sale of agricultural land to non-Goans soon

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Thursday reiterated that his Government would try to bring legislation in the forthcoming assembly session to ban sale of agricultural land to non-Goans.
Stating this at a press conference at Altinho, here, the chief minister said the bill would be formulated on lines of an Act in force in Uttarakhand.
Kamat said when he had taken up the issue of special status to Goa with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, it was pointed out that the special status granted to North Eastern States cannot be granted to Goa. This is because the same is not extended anywhere outside the North Eastern region.
Goa instead, can formulate its own legislation to protect its land and that some States have already been following it, the Chief Minister was told. The Prime Minister had also mentioned that such legislation had not been challenged in court.
