MARGAO: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has opined that the issue of official language status to Marathi is being politicised for taking advantage of the issue in the upcoming 2016-17 assembly elections.
Referring to the agitation for official language status to Marathi, Parsekar said, “The issue is being politicised by a select group of leaders who are eyeing at gaining mileage in the upcoming assembly elections. Making the language official needs a properly studied draft which can later be placed and passed as bill. The procedure is not simple and takes quite a lot of time.”
Meanwhile, Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said that he was positive that official language status would be accorded to Marathi. However, he quickly tempered his statement saying what he said was his “personal opinion as the party’s position on the issue has neither been discussed nor publicised.”
Meanwhile, the Marathi Rajyabhasha Samiti will on Wednesday hold demonstrations at the Old Collectorate in Margao demanding official language to the status to Marathi.
It may be recalled that the Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal is also planning to present a private member Bill in the upcoming assembly session which has the support of MLAs Vijai Sardesai, Digambar Kamat and some others.
