PANJIM: Founder member of BJP in Goa and an iconic figure in State politics Madhav Dhond was cremated at St Inez crematorium on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, cabinet ministers, BJP State unit President Vinay Tendulkar and party office bearers besides Dhond’s family and friends gathered to pay him their last tribute.
The senior politician-cum-businessman, who contested from Panjim constituency twice in the 1980s, died after a prolonged illness at Goa Medical College and Hospital on Monday.
“It is a great loss to the party. He would reach out to the people anytime, any day without hesitation. He did not discriminate between any communities and maintained good relations with everyone. We always look at him as our support pillar,” Tendulkar told Herald.
“Dhond attended every national seminar of the party,” he added.
Dhond, whom the party workers fondly called ‘Madhu’, was also close to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Tendulkar recalled that every summer, Dhond would deliver Goa’s famous ‘Mankurad’ mangoes to Vajpayee at his residence in Delhi.
