MARGAO: Asserting the Parrikar government is facing a litmus test on putting a stop to crimes against women and children in the state, city-based Bailancho Ekvott said the state of crimes against women under a no nonsense home minister, who swears by zero tolerance to criminal activity can best be gauged by the host of cases reported in recent times.

Addressing the media, Bailanchok Ekvott president Auda Viegas said the women’s NGO has encountered a host of crimes against women and children, while lamenting that the numbers seems increasing by the day.

She cited the Vasco girl rape case; the attack on a school girl at Betalbtim; a policeman luring an adolescent innocent illiterate village girl in the guise of marriage, assault by two policemen on a transgender and some commercial sex workers etc.

“All these incidents are a litmus test for what the women and children can expect at the hands of the law enforcers. Crimes against women and children, mostly children, are increasingly being reported in Goa. The unacceptable part is that the criminal gets ample opportunity to abscond or apply for bail in anticipation of arrest,” she added.

Either, we have a defunt police intelligence or the beat patrol is non-functional, the reason is for the police to find out. Crimes and culprits require stiff stern handling to ensure the safety of our women and children”, she added.

While appreciating the Home Ministry decision to separate investigation of crime from law and order, Auda also called for the protection of their human rights to ensure maximum efficiency in the discharge of their duties.
