PANJIM: Azad Jamatul Muslimeen Welfare Trust has urged the Chief Minister of Goa to look into the shortage of public crematoriums and burial grounds in Goa, failing which, they will approach the court.
They pointed out that there are 43 crematoriums for Hindus, 50 cemeteries for Christians and 172
kabrastans for Muslims in the State.
They also pointed out that in the case of deaths of non- Goans and foreigners visiting Goa, the authorities find it difficult to cremate or bury such persons due to this issue.
They argued that on account of the increase in population, the crematoriums and burial grounds are too small or crowded.
The trust, which has been sending letters to different authorities, has submitted all the details to the CM and given the government a 30-day-deadline, before it approaches the Panjim bench of the Bombay High Court.
“In 2018, we filled 47 petitions with the Goa Human Rights, which had ordered the Goa Chief Secretary (CS), to take action but nothing was done. Then we met Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godhino, but he said that there are not enough places for crematoriums in Goa. Then we approached the Goa Governor, who had given an order to the CS, but still no action has been taken. We even met Union Minister of Minority Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who also gave an order to the CS but nothing has happened,” said Sayed Manzoor Kadri, Trust President.
