MARGAO: Asserting that Salcete will get an independent garbage treatment plant at the Verna Industrial Estate, Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar on Friday said that the proposed Rs 100-plus crore plant will not be like the Sonsodo unit where garbage is just being dumped instead of being treated by the plant.
“Salcete will have an independent waste treatment plant. It will be set up at Verna. Salcete is a big unit by itself and Curchorem is too far away from the taluka. The plant proposed at Curchorem will take care of the waste generated in Curchorem and surrounding villages,” Parrikar said in an informal chat with newsmen.
He said the proposed plant will be a closed vessel treatment unit, which will convert the waste into fuel and gas. “The plant will meet strict environment norms. Neither smell will emanate from the plant nor would there be any leachate. Except the land, the contractor will have to invest Rs 100-plus crore in the plant. We are not going to invest any money. The government will only make the payments over a period of 10 years. It is the contractor who is taking the risks since there are stringent conditions which requires to be complied before starting the plant,” he said, adding “the plant will be more like an industry. You put the waste inside and what will come out is a marketable product. Gas generated in the plant can be used for electricity or can be sold in cylinders.”
He said the government would initially set up two garbage treatment plants in North and South for trial purpose. We have to start somewhere. And the South plant will basically cater to Salcete which will be set up in the Verna Industrial Estate,” he added.
