Chief Minister Digambar Kamat would finally take the final decision on the new Chairperson for the Margao Municipal Council, while the post of vice-Chairperson may go to the senior most member from the camp of GPCC general secretary Vijay Sardessai.
This was decided at a meeting between the Chief Minister and the GPCC general secretary held in the city on Thursday evening.
The duo was huddled together for quite some wherein Kamat and Sardessai took stock of the situation and the post poll scenario.
Given that this is an election year, it is learnt that both the Congress leaders have agreed to decide the Civic leadership issue amicably given that the Congress has swept polls for the Margao Civic body by completely routing the BJP.
Sources in the know said during the confabulations, the GPCC general secretary is learnt to have put up a host of conditions before the Chief Minister, including development package for Fatorda, jobs for the locals, rehabilitation policy for the land losers, et al.
Both Kamat and Sardessai are believed to have stressed on the need to provide a stable council for the citizens of Margao. In this backdrop, the Chief Minister has reportedly told the GPCC general secretary that the Civic vice-Chairperson ought to be from his group to lend stability to the Council.
In the 20-member body, around nine councilors-elect belong to the Chief Minister’s camp, while around seven are believed to be owing allegiance to the Sardessai group.
A formal decision on the new Chairperson is likely to be taken by weekend when the councilors-elect from both the Kamat and Sardessai camp would meet and choose the leader.
