CM to meet Archbishop amidst CAA row

PANJIM: Days after Archbishop Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which has seen a split in the BJP cabinet, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said he will meet the Archbishop in the next two days.

“I am meeting the Archbishop in the next two days, depending upon the appointment he gives,” Sawant said.

Sawant refused to reply when asked the reason for the meeting. Last week, the Archbishop had urged the Central government to “immediately and unconditionally revoke the CAA” and stop quashing the “right to dissent”.

He had also appealed to the government not to implement the proposed countrywide National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).

In response, Goa BJP’s general secretary Narendra Sawaikar had asked why the Archbishop was opposing CAA when “crores of people including Goans” were supporting the new law.
