CALANGUTE: Calangute panchayat members on Monday met chief minister Pramod Sawant, who is also the home minister, and urged him to clampdown on the various illegal activities like dance bars going on in the tourism hub. The panchayat members were accompanied by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo.
They said if the government takes no action, then visitors will find that Calangute is an unsafe destination in the future.
“Illegal activities on the beach and touts cheating tourists need to be stopped, because legal businesses are at stake. Touts misguiding and cheating tourists are giving the coastal belt a bad name, and though police have been taking action by fining them, more needs to be done,” he said.
Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira has also promised to take tough action against dance bars operating illegally in the village, claiming that the panchayat has not given permission to any dance bars.
He said the panchayat has already taken a resolution to shut down illegal dance bars in Calangute.
“We are going to take on the dance bars head on,” Sequeira said.
Stating that there are 13 allegeddance bars in Calangute, he said the Calangutepolice inspector has promised full cooperation to shut them down. “We are doing it. I am firm on it. We have already written to the PI to stop the dance bars,” he said.
