MARGAO: Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai’s dream Fatorda Lake project has once again come in for strong opposition from the farmers and local citizens as they made an impassioned plea to Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar to save their fields and promote agricultural activities.

The opposition was conveyed to the government via a memorandum submitted to the office of district Collector, N D Agrawal this morning.

Activist Laurel Abranches said the proposed lake project would spell doom for the farmers who have been cultivating their ancestral fields for generations now.

“Instead of converting the fields into a lake for the tourists, the government should provide all out support for the farmers by way of fertilizers, seeds and machinery”, he demanded.

In the memorandum, the farmers contended that they will loose their livelihood and will be left high and dry without any income and resources to sustain if the Fatorda lake project is constructed over their fields. “Secondly, since this will be an artificial lake, the government will have to unnecessarily shell out crores of rupees from the tax payers money to make the project a reality”, the farmers said.

The farmers have also called upon the Chief Minister to investigate and punish the persons who have deleted the names of their ancestors from the Comunidade documents, with a plea to restore their names back on the documents.
