MARGAO: There seems to be no headway in the Anti-Corruption Bureau probe into the discrepancies in the accounts of the Cuncolim Municipal Council.
Herald understands that the Accounts department is believed to have suggested around 30 names of accountants to the government to form a panel of auditors to go into the accounts of the civic body. However, no decision has been taken by the government so far, with the ongoing inquiry by the Anti-Corruption Bureau hitting a roadblock.
Sources in the ACB admitted that much time has been lost in the probe of the accounts following a complaint that an amount of Rs 40 lakh, which was deposited in the bank, did not reflect in the municipal cash books. This had raised many an eyebrow in the corridors of the civic body as well as in the town, with questions being raised as to why the amount was not shown on the municipal books. While the ACB had seized the account books and other relevant documents a couple of months ago, the inquiry has come to a standstill over the delay in the appointment of a panel of auditors.
