CANACONA: In view of Ruby Residency building collapse, Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to forgo its responsibility once ‘Occupancy Certificate’ is issued, making the liability solely that of contractor and builder.
This was decided in the council’s meeting held this week. The councillors felt it was time to make it official that the civic body’s responsibility gets over soon after ‘occupancy certificate’ is issued as the local body’s role ends there.
It was further decided to make its decision public that it is the sole liability of contractor, builder and the promoter and that the civic body will not be held liable for any lapses or shortcomings in its constructions or maintenance whatsoever the nature.
The council has also identified five private buildings within its jurisdiction, most of which are located at Chaudi and Char-Rasta, and it was resolved to inform PWD to initiate action deemed fit by them since these buildings pose danger to public and property.
It was also resolved that the council will ascertain the fitness of its own buildings, particularly two buildings situated at old fish market, vegetable market and IDSMT building and initiate necessary action, besides carrying out water proofing, renovations, painting, etc.
Chief Officer Ajit Painguinkar and Municipal Engineer Nitin Kawthankar, Chairperson Mahadev Dessai and all councillors, except for one, were present for the meeting.
