CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council is to engage 20 additional labourers to cope with various urgent pre-monsoon works, as decided at an especially convened meeting on Tuesday.
The pre-monsoon works will be undertaken in all 10 wards of the municipality on urgent basis, as pre-monsoon showers has already begun to flood certain low lying areas.
In the meeting, presided over by chairperson Simon Rebello, CMC resolved to engage 20 additional labourers to assist the existing civic workers to complete all works pertaining to pre-monsoon preparations.
‘The field staff has already identified flood prone areas, where de-silting is required before monsoon begins, and accordingly the municipal supervisor is directed to act, swiftly,’ informed Rebello.
Rs 4 lakh have been earmarked for the pre-monsoon works. CMC will also request electricity department and fire services to trim trees hindering power supply, before the onset of monsoons,’ Rebello informed.
Residents complain that if the choked gutters and nullahs are not desilted in time, they will flood several residential areas.
Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar, Municipal Engineer Sanju Dessai and Municipal Supervisor Krishna Dessai were present and except for the Ponsulem councillor, all council members and deputy chairperson Champa Pagi were present.
