MARGAO: Facing flak over the absence of any mechanism to tackle the stray dog menace, the Cuncolim Municipal Council is bracing up to ink an agreement with an NGO to take up sterilisation and Animal Birth Control (ABC) program in the town.
Incidents of stray dog menace and dog bites have been on the rise in the town with residents complaining of stray dogs in their localities.
Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Desai said the civic body will hold discussions with the NGO GAWT how to go about tackling the stray dog menace. “The civic body will enter into an agreement with the NGO to ensure that stray dogs are treated and sterilised periodically”, he said.
The CMC Chairperson said the civic body will not mind spending an amount to provide basic infrastructure such as a dog shelter and cages to house the dogs after sterilisation. “We have acquired land near the industrial estate at the waste treatment plant and a portion can be utilised to set up the dog shelter and cages”, he said, adding that the civic body will approach the government for financial help if the need arises.
Like many a village across Salcete’s countryside, there’s no basic infrastructure in place in Cuncolim town to take care of the stray dogs. In fact, before the High Court order on killing of dogs came into force over a decade ago, the Cuncolim Municipal body used to resort to killing of dogs by engaging a shooter to dispose of the strays from the market area.
