MAPUSA: Swimming coach Surajit Ganguly was arrested by Goa police in New Delhi on Friday within less than 48-hours of the crime being reported to them.
The coach is accused of allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl who was training with him. The complainant, who is the father of the victim, had approached Rishra Police Station in Hooghly district of West Bengal with the complaint against the swimming coach.
Both the girl and the accused hail from West Bengal.
The complaint said the incident had happened at Mapusa in Goa.
After receiving the complaint, the North Goa District Police immediately sprung into action and Hooghly Police Station was contacted regarding the matter. The complaint was obtained from West Bengal via e-mail and FIR was immediately registered in the matter.
According to Mapusa Police, a case has been registered under IPC Sections 451 (trespass), 376 (rape), 354 (molestation) and 506 (criminal intimidation), as well as Section 6 & 8 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and Section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act was registered against the coach.
In order to nab the accused Surajit Ganguly, a team was constituted under North Goa SP, Utkrisht Prasoon with SDPO Mapusa, Gajanand Prabhudessai; Mapusa PI, Kapil Nayak and other staff from Mapusa police station.
With the use of technical surveillance and local intelligence the movement of the accused was traced. It was found that the accused was travelling to different cities in order to evade arrest. Teams were sent to different locations to nab the accused. The location of the accused was finally found in New Delhi in Kashmere Gate area, where he may have been trying to travel further. In coordination with the local police staff of Delhi, he was apprehended in Kashmere Gate area.
The accused is currently in Delhi and remand for the accused will be sought in the due course.
