Coast Guard evacuates Mexican who suffered cardiac arrest

VASCO: The Indian Coast Guard ship undertook medical evacuation of a 53-year-old Mexican citizen suffering from cardiac arrest onboard Malta flagged ship MV Celebrity Millennium 30 nautical miles west off Goa coast on Monday. The patient was shifted to the hospital for further medical management.

According to a statement from the Indian Coast Guard, a message was received from passenger vessel Celebrity Millennium facing a medical emergency far from land in sea at 7.25 pm on Monday, in position 40-km inside sea, stating that one passenger namely Fernando Cruz Mendez (53) from Mexico, is suffering from heart attack. The vessel’s last Port of call was Mormugao and was proceeding towards Mumbai.

Coast Guard Headquarters at Goa, immediately diverted ICGS C-158 which was on area patrol to render assistance to the patient onboard Celebrity Millennium. The ICG ship reached alongside the vessel at 9.30 pm for evacuation of the patient. At about 9.40 pm ship casted off from MV Celebrity Millennium along with the patient, his wife and a medical attendant and headed towards Mormugao harbour.

The ICG ship entered Mormugao Harbour at 11.30 pm and handed over the patient to an ambulance provided by an agent at Mormugao Port.

 for further medical management in a private hospital at Vasco, the statement said.
