Coast Guard rescues 19 crew of sinking vessel off Ratnagiri

On receipt of a distress call, the ship immediately proceeded for rescue despite the rough seas and strong winds.

VASCO: The Coast Guard rescued 19 crew members, who were in distress in a sinking merchant vessel MT Parth off the Ratnagiri coast on Friday.

“At about 10.45 am, Indian Coast Guard ship ‘Sujeet’ whilst on routine patrolling in the area received a distress call from MT Parth (MMSI 462600264) Gabon, Africa flagged vessel of 102 mtr in length, 80 nautical miles from Mormugao port, about flooding in the vessel,” an official Coast Guard press release stated. 

On receipt of a distress call, the ship immediately proceeded for rescue despite the rough seas and strong winds. In addition, ICGS Apoorva and a Coast Guard ‘Dhruv’ helicopter were also diverted to render assistance to the distressed vessel.

“The ship rendered assistance and rescued all the 19 crew who had abandoned the ship in life-raft, against the high swell. The ship is bringing all the rescued crew to Goa and is likely to arrive on September 18. They will be handed over to the Coastal Police Vasco for further medical management and other formalities,” the release stated.

“The swift response initiated by the vigilant team of Indian Coast Guard in Goa continues to juxtapose with its motto ‘Vayam Rakshamah — We Protect’,” the release added.
