VASCO: The Indian Coast Guard will keep a constant vigil to stop illegal dumping of garbage along the road from Varunapuri to Shantinagar.
The garbage attracts lot of birds which pose danger to the aircraft landing and taking off at the Dabolim Airport.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida informed about the vigil whilst speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cleanliness drive taken up by Mormugao Municipal Council on Tuesday.
“The bird hits have increased at the Dabolim airport and one of the main reasons behind this is the increase in birds that come to feed on the garbage,” Almeida said.
“To control the same the South Goa Collector Sachin Shinde held a series of meetings with agencies concerned and even issued directions to all including the MMC. One such order was to keep the section of NH 17 B road garbage free,” Almeida added.
“In order to comply with the directions, MMC first identified the areas which are most affected by the illegal dumping of garbage and it was brought to the notice that the road stretch from Varunapuri to Shantinagar on the NH 17 B is the most affected with garbage menace.
“We decided to first conduct a cleanliness drive all along the said road stretch. Upon our request the coast guard officials have agreed to deploy security personnel to keep vigil and catch people dumping garbage on NH 17 B road stretch from Shantinagar to Varunapuri,” Almeida told herald.
Meanwhile the MMC Chairperson, who along with battery of councillors was present during the cleanliness drive, said: “We have a door-to-door collection drive in all 25 wards under MMC but still people are dumping garbage on the roadsides. We cannot tolerate such nuisance anymore. We have now decided that whoever is caught while dumping the garbage on the road sides will be fined heavily without any compromise or excuse,” Deepak Naik said.
“I will first discus with my councillors and try to strictly implement a ban on plastic in Vasco so that we can successfully achieve our goal of making Vasco garbage free by May 15, 2016,” the MMC chairperson added.
