MARGAO: In a culmination of extensive deliberations and assessments, the G Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has given preliminary approval to Mother Ocean Pvt Ltd for their proposed open
sea mussel farming venture in Mashem-Canacona, South Goa.
It is to be noted that this private company had initiated the process by filing an application with the GCZMA on November 3, 2023, seeking a no-objection certificate (NOC) for their envisioned open sea mussel farming enterprise. Subsequently, during the 377th GCZMA meeting in December 2023, the company was instructed to furnish an environmental impact assessment (EIA) study for further scrutiny.
Following this, the GCZMA convened on February 15 to review the company’s EIA report. Seeking expert insights, the authority sought feedback from the Directorate of Fisheries, receiving their comments on April 18, 2024.
Upon evaluating the project’s merits, the GCZMA acknowledged the ecological benefits of mussel farming, emphasising their role as natural filters and carbon sequestration agents, which align with environmental sustainability objectives.
While extending approval, the GCZMA has imposed
several conditions on Mother Ocean Pvt Ltd. These include ensuring that the farming activities do not impede local fishermen’s operations or maritime navigation,
conducting awareness sessions with local communities, utilising eco-friendly materials for infrastructure, and committing to the removal of all structures post-project completion.
Additionally, the company must obtain concurrent approval from the Directorate of fisheries before commencing operations. Any grievances from the local fishing community regarding disruptions may prompt a re-evaluation, alongside a requisite approval fee of Rs 5 lakh.
The GCZMA touched
upon the potential socioeconomic benefits of the project, envisioning employment opportunities and supplementary income avenues for the fishing community, albeit indirectly.
