MARGAO:The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has given the Water Resources Department (WRD) clearance to build an anti-erosion wall at Canaguinim beach in Naqueri-Betul.
According to the GCZMA, the beach is eroding quickly, so protecting the inland areas with an anti-erosion wall is essential.
In the minutes of the meeting, GCZMA observed that the surface area of the ground is getting eroded at a fast pace. The Authority further emphasised that the beach and the inlands need to be protected at the earliest or else it would result in a catastrophe of irreversible damage.
It may be recalled that since August of last year, WRD has been seeking GCZMA’s approval to build the preventative anti-erosion measures.
The WRD was asked by GCZMA earlier to provide the project information in a presentation.
WRD had also asked for permission to put anti-erosion measures in place at Coco beach in Maimvadda-Nerul and had also given a detailed presentation of the Nerul project to the GCZMA. In that case, they were asked to submit an environment impact assessment report before permission for the work is granted.
Both these beaches have been ravaged by sand erosion in the last couple of years.
