COLD FACTS: 59 lives were lost on Goa’s roads in 90 days between April and June

36 deaths in two-wheeler alone; 30 people died on the roads in 321 accidents in May

PANJIM: Figures at times speak more than a thousand words. The hard truth about deaths on Goan roads, in all likelihood, the highest in India in the ratio of its population, is out. From May to June this year 59 people died in road accidents in Goa. That is more than 2 deaths each day.  Ten of them were pedestrians.

In May there were 321 accidents at the rate of ten plus accidents per day.

Of this, 36 fatal accidents involved two-wheelers, alone. 

As per the statistics released by the Directorate of Transport, a total of 802 accidents were reported in the State during the three months from April to June. 

May turned out to be a deadly month, recording 321 accidents and 30 deaths in 28 fatal accidents. A total of 16 riders, three drivers, and eight pedestrians lost their lives in the accidents. Three passengers, including a pillion rider, also lost their lives. 

In June, 18 people were killed in 239 accidents. Those who died included 12 two-wheeler riders, two pillion riders, and two pedestrians. One driver and another person were also killed in a fatal accident. 

The month of April had witnessed 242 accidents involving 11 deaths that included a two-wheeler rider and his pillion. Apart from fatal accidents, as many as 46 accidents were of grievous nature, while another 151 were minor accidents. 

During the three-month period, the Transport Department issued 2,318 challans for violations of the Motor Vehicle Act.
