Collector alerted on ‘illegal encroachment’ of Mopa land

Samiti claims the govt had demolished houses, encroached land and damaged the cashew plantation in the name of Mopa airport

PANJIM: Mopa Pidit Sangharsh Samiti, Goa Kul Mundkar Sangharsh Samiti and Bodgeshwar Xetkari Samiti of Pernem and Bardez Taluka have submitted a memorandum to the office of Collectorate in regard to the illegal trespassing and encroachment of land by GMR International Airport limited, the company which is looking after the construction of Mopa airport. 

According to Suresh Talkatkar, a claimant, in the year 2017 the Goa government, by making fake promises had demolished their houses, had encroached their land and slashed the cashew plantation in the name of Mopa airport, on which their livelihood was dependent.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Talkatkar said, “there exist our tenanted property at Schemecheadwan, Warkhand, Pernem which was not acquired by the government for construction of Mopa airport. The GMR International Airport limited company, which is looking after the Mopa airport construction is illegally trespassing and encroaching the said property. In doing so, the company has also destructed our tenanted agricultural property”, said Talkatkar. 

Speaking further he said, “I had lodged a complaint with Pernem police against the GMR International Ltd. in last month, but till date no action is taken. On the contrary, the company is still trespassing in our property without proper acquisition and to our surprise Pernem police authority is also supporting illegal act of this company, he added. 

Adding to this, Narayan Gadekar, President of Mopa Sangharsh Samiti, alleged that, “the Police official who is known as ‘Singham of Pernem Taluka’, is threatening the Mopa locals by helping the said company to trespass thereby supporting the illegal activities carried out by the company.
