Collector orders Electricity Dept to restore dug-up roads in Curtorim

MARGAO: In a swift response to concerns raised by locals regarding the condition of roads dug up for laying underground cables in Curtorim, the District Collector’s office has issued directives to the Electricity Department to restore the roads to their original condition without delay.

Srinet Kothwale, Additional Collector-I, informed O Heraldo that his office acted upon receiving a complaint from Zilla Panchayat member Michelle Rebello. In her complaint, Rebello had expressed serious concern over road safety. It was observed that roads dug for laying underground cables by the Electricity Department had turned into death traps in Curtorim.

“The roads in Maina-Curtorim were dug up for underground cabling purposes but are now left unattended with major deep pits in the centre, causing grave danger to motorists and pedestrians,” said Rebello. She also highlighted that the Electricity Department has not learned lessons even after incidents causing the loss of lives of citizens and animals. Rebello criticised the government for its insensitivity towards the safety and security of the citizens and for lacking a mechanism to monitor the work of underground cabling.

Santano Fernandes, another local, voiced his frustration over the issue of unrepaired roads, emphasizing the danger it poses to the public. “This is purely negligence on the part of the Electricity Department and the concerned authorities. How come roads dug up are left unrepaired despite directions from the collectorate office to restore the roads by May 31?” he questioned.
