MARGAO: A group under the banner of Concerned Citizens of Margao, besides heads of nearly seven Masjid Committees from in and around Margao on Friday urged the South Goa District Collector to give serious thought in the matter of recent clash between two groups and take necessary steps to maintain peace and harmony in the locality pertaining to the recent clash between two groups at Housing Board.
A delegation led by Muzafar Shaikh and others met South Goa District Collector Sajit Rodrigues and urged to take necessary steps.
Speaking to the media persons Muzafar Shaikh said that the locality of Housing Board, Margao is experiencing an uneasy ambiance since the last couple of days due to the presence of some fascist right-wing individuals whose prime objective is to disturb the peace and harmony amongst the various communities residing in the locality.
“As a part of Muslim community’s celebration of Eid-e-Milad, the streets of housing board were decorated with lights and flags. However, in order to hurt the sentiments and to purposely instigate the Muslim community, few went on to damage and disrespect the flag. Even threats were given to the locals”, he stated.
Muzafar further claimed that an illegal procession was taken out by a group of people aiming to instigate communal violence in the area. “One of the members even made derogatory statements”, he stated.
“The question arises is, despite knowing the sensitivity of the matter, how does the Goa police allow the people from other places to gather? And why did the police not take any actions to stop the illegal rally? Who would have been responsible if any untoward incident had taken place due to illegal and communally motivated procession?” he questioned.
The delegation in their memorandum further stated that the incident has once again proven the failure of the State machinery to function efficiently and is neglecting the calls raised by the Muslim voices.
