Collectors urged to remove party posters from Govt property

PANJIM: As posters of political parties deface government properties, the Public Works Department (PWD) has requested District Collectors to take necessary action to clear all the posters, displaced on their property.

Ahead of Assembly elections, a large number of posters, hoardings, buntings, flex and display boards have sprung up at various nook and corner of the State. The parties are seen defacing both the government as well as private properties.

In a letter to both North and South District Collectors — PWD Chief Engineer D C Gupta stated that political parties have defaced the government property, especially the piers/walls of VUPs/flyovers, in the elevated stretches of national highways and other roads.

“Requested to kindly take necessary action in the matter,” said Gupta.

Undoubtedly, the scene has brought out prevailing political scenario in the State. Ruling BJP, Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress are at forefront.

Display boards highlighting promises and achievements of BJP-led government stand out. However, the new entrant TMC’s hoardings and posters featuring their leader West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has overpowered even the ruling party, in complete defacement of the State.

Earlier, the State Electricity Department has raised objection to putting up posters on their property including poles. However, now it has allowed, with necessary permissions and rental charges.

During the Election Commission of India (ECI) team visit, the Congress party had raised objection to such defacement, ahead of Assembly elections and demanded necessary action. However, with election code yet to come into force, the Commission was not in position to act.
