MARGAO, NOV 16
In a symbolic protest against the long delay in four-laning the Navelim Church-Margao flyover road at the entrance to the Commercial capital, residents of Colmorod placed a placard at the site of road works wishing the people a “safe” Our Lady of Rosary feast on Wednesday.
Led by outgoing Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho, the protestors demanded early completing completion of the four lane road by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation headed by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.
“This is just a message to the authorities over the plight of the road users on a daily basis. We had been demanding widening of the road since 1995 and had managed to get the work tendered by GSIDC in 2008”, he said.
Coutinho, however, said that though the contractor was set a 15-month deadline by the GSIDC to complete the work, there’s little progress in the work so far.
“Even work on the footpaths are not completed”, he said, adding that though the Chief Minister had set a deadline of April 24 last year to shift hot mix at least one lane and shift the electric poles, nothing has changed on the ground till date.
Demanding that work on the project be expedited by the Agency, Coutinho said that the deep trench right in the middle of the road has posed danger to motorists.
