Colva fishermen flustered by dramatic hike in fees for fish drying platforms

The Fisheries Dept has increased the fee from Rs 100 to Rs 3,000; fisherfolk call for better facilities, security and reliable water and power supply

MARGAO: Traditional fishermen have questioned the rationale behind the recent decision taken by the Fisheries Department to increase the renewal fees for using the fish drying platforms at the Colva-based Fisheries complex from Rs 100 to Rs 3,000. The 14-odd families of local fishermen who have been using the platforms at this complex for years expressed shock at the sudden and exorbitant fee hike.

“What is the reason behind this sudden change? We have the receipts for the last five years of the fees we have paid per year. As it is, the facilities are not good. We are ready to pay Rs 500 or a maximum of Rs 1,000 but not Rs 3,000. We are already suffering financially, and this will cause us great losses,” said a local fisherman. “In the recently concluded Assembly session, the Fisheries Minister had assured that he would look into our demand but nothing has changed,” he rued.

Furthermore, they stressed on the importance of regular water and electricity supply at the Fisheries complex. They also stressed the importance of enhanced security measures, including a gated entrance, as the area is susceptible to nighttime intrusion by anti-social elements who have previously threatened them and even stolen their fish.

They added that presently the demand for dry fish is low and they need support from the government to survive, rather than getting fleeced.

Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas has asked the Chief Minister to intervene, and ensure that the Finance Department reduces the fees.
