MARGAO: The Colva Panchayat on Thursday cracked the whip on the illegal and unauthorised carts in the village, mainly in areas near the beach. At least 15 carts were removed with the help of the police. The panchayat has decided to demolish the extended portion of the carts.
Colva Panchayat Secretary initiated the action in the presence of former sarpanch Menino Fernandes and Colva Police Sub-Inspector Sapna Gawas and support staff. “The team removed at least 15 carts and the action will continue,” Panch Fernandes said.
The secretary said that the panchayat had taken resolution to hold surprise inspection at the areas under its jurisdiction. He also said that the panchayat would continue the action on Friday.
“Most of the carts which were given licences were for sale of ross omelette, but most of them have been converted into fruit stalls, Chinese food stall and others. Letters of this action have already been delivered to the local MLA and others concerned,” Fernandes said.
“The resolution for the removal of the roadside carts was taken by me in 2019. They are a major problem for traffic and pedestrians. We will remove the ones which are without licence and will decide further action against the ones without licences,” he said.
