MARGAO: A police constable attached to the Colva police station, Rohan Naik, aged 35 years, was rushed to Hospicio, Margao, after he allegedly consumed rat cake on Tuesday evening.
District police chief Shekhar Prabhudessai told the media late Tuesday evening that he has told SDPO Margao DySP Mohan Naik to conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report. He further said that he has instructed Colva police station in-charge PI Uttam Raut Desai to intimate the matter to the Sub-divisional Magistrate, Margao, to record the constable’s statement. The constable is presently undergoing treatment at the hospital and is under observation.
The incident occurred at around 7 pm shortly after he reported at the police station. Colva PI Desai said that Rohan reported at the police station barracks at around 7 pm this evening. “Moments later, a constable came rushing to my cabin saying that Rohan was not keeping well and needed attention. I immediately rushed towards the barracks and since there was no police jeep, I told my staff to take him to Hospicio in my car. While entering the vehicle, Rohan vomited outside”, he said.
Superintendent of police Shekhar Prabhudessai, who rushed to Hospicio after hearing the news, said the exact motive behind the drastic step could not be ascertained since the constable was not fit to give any statement. Asked whether there’s any allegation of harassment that has resulted in the constable taking the drastic step, SP Prabhudessai said, “We will come to know about the motive only when Rohan is fit to give a statement. I have told PI Desai to intimate the incident to the SDM for recording of the constable’s statement”, Prabhudesai said
When asked to react to reports that there was a verbal duel between the constable and PI Desai in the morning, which might have led him to take the drastic step, SP Prabhudessai said, “It might be true. But let it come from the mouth of the constable so that it gets some weightage”.
Sources said that Rohan was supposed to join duty at 1 pm on Tuesday noon, but he was marked absent since he did not report
to work.
