Colva sarpanch explains why waste management failed in village

MARGAO: At a public meeting held at the Colva panchayat, the Colva sarpanch Snowkon Gonsavles said the garbage issue can be thoroughly solved only when the pancahyat manages to get suitable land in the village for the same.

Given that the waste management issue was the predominant topic raised by several villagers at the meeting, the sarpanch explained that the matter is in the High Court but that all possible efforts will be made for proper waste management. He added that the panchayat will take a call on the issue once the High Court delivers its judgement on the matter and that the panchayat had challenged the prior decision of the court.
Gonsalves was responding to the queries from people who wanted to know why there was no full-fledged system in place for the garbage collected from residential houses and establishments.
While pointing that the Goa State Pollution Control Board has withdrawn the license issued to the panchayat for waste segregation, Gonslaves explained that the land acquisition proceedings are held up at section 7 of the Land Acquisition Act.
On a different issue, villagers voiced their concern over reckless driving of vehicles along the Colva-Margao road thereby leading to accidents, and it was resolved that speed breakers would be erected on that road.
Sernabatim residents also demanded that the panchayat assists them in getting the electricity department to address their grievances and over the issue of electric wires posing a danger to commuters, vehicles and pedestrians.
